Domestic violence and the mental health of male victims in Goma

Abstract

This study demonstrates that domestic violence in Goma, although largely underreported by men (85.7 per cent), is a major determinant of the deterioration of their mental health (U = 2.000; p = 0.001). The analyses reveal a very strong positive correlation (ρ/rho = 0.904) between the intensity of abuse and the severity of psychological disorders, with a substantial effect size (r = 0.58). Multiple regression modelling identifies psychological violence as the most significant predictor (β = 0.561; p < 0.001), surpassing economic violence. These results highlight the harmful impact of emotional abuse and call for official recognition of male victimisation, as well as the roll-out of psychological support services free from gender bias.
