Two economies: the old and the new – a key concept in the transformation of economic systems and how to manage organisations today

Abstract

We had all realised that this concluding article is currently part of a series of publications that are beginning to help the public understand both the new and the old economies in many of their facets. As the saying goes: in a country where guerrilla warfare rages, a goods train pushes a small cart whose role is to detonate any explosive charges that might be placed on the track. In the same way, the vision contained in this article plays the same role as that cart, for the future is always a ‘guerrilla’ territory where unexpected elements – which may seem insignificant – are capable of derailing today’s firmly established and seemingly indestructible trends; or, to change the metaphor, it can be regarded as a ‘precursor warning signal’ heralding the elements of discontinuity which, although still in their infancy, are already transforming the structure and meaning of yesterday’s and today’s economy and society.
