Abstract

Introduction: Air pollution is a major public health problem, particularly in mining areas where exposure to fine particulate matter and toxic gases is high.

Methods: A mixed-methods study (quantitative and qualitative) was conducted amongst 100 mining workers in the Kanzenze health zone in Kolwezi. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests and logistic regression, as well as a thematic analysis of the verbatim transcripts.

Results: The results show predominantly moderate to high exposure to air pollutants. The prevalence of respiratory symptoms was 65 per cent. A significant association was observed between the level of exposure and respiratory conditions (p < 0.05). Risk factors include high exposure, duration of exposure and failure to use PPE. The qualitative findings confirm a high perception of risk, though this is limited by socio-economic constraints.

Discussion: The results are consistent with studies conducted in sub-Saharan Africa, showing a close link between air pollution and respiratory diseases.

Conclusion: Air pollution in mining environments poses a major risk to respiratory health, requiring urgent intervention.
