In the university pastoral ministry at Sapientia Catholic University in Goma, it is important to emphasise spiritual formation, which is the foundation of the lay faithful’s socio-political engagement. All too often, the behaviour of political figures, senior managers, lecturers and students is marred by corruption, the pursuit of money and power, lies and deceit, because they did not initially receive a sound spiritual, moral and human formation. Their behaviour is not in harmony with their faith. Hence the need to provide students, lecturers, administrative staff and support staff with spiritual formation and a sound grounding in the Church’s social teaching, so that they may bear witness to their faith within their families and in their professional environments through catechesis, Catholic Action movements and prayer groups.
